From Aug. 17 -Sept. 5, JCC Police will commit extra enforcement to deter impaired driving as part of the NHTSA’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national enforcement mobilization.
During this time, you may notice increased police presence patrolling for anyone who is driving impaired (influenced by alcohol, drugs, etc.). The Department aims to keep roads safe for the start of the school year and Labor Day travelers.
Nationally, on Labor Day weekend in 2019, there were 451 traffic crash deaths with 38% of these deaths involving a drunk driver. Annually, over 10,000 people are killed by drunk driving.
James City County drivers are encouraged to follow these tips to keep the holidays safe and happy:
If you will be drinking, do not expect to drive! Plan your safe return home before you start the party. Designate a sober driver ahead of time and follow through with your commitment.
If you become intoxicated, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi or utilize a ridesharing platform like Uber or Lyft. Phone a sober friend or family member or use public transportation.
If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys, take them home, or help them arrange a safe way home. If you are the host, request that your guests drive sober. Responsible driving is a team effort!
If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact your local law enforcement immediately. Your actions could save someone’s life, be vigilant.
Always employ safe driving habits and wear your seatbelt to mitigate the risk of death or serious injury in a car accident. Be safe, be alert.
Remember, it is never safe to drink and drive. James City County Police will be looking for drunk drivers. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
