City of Williamsburg Voter Registrar Proposes Changes to Precinct Boundaries

The City of Williamsburg’s Voter Registrar is proposing changes to the boundaries of the City’s two voting precincts.The current Stryker precinct polling place has a significantly larger number of registered voters assigned to it than the Matoaka precinct polling place – 6,521 in Stryker and 3,947 in Matoaka.To better balance the precincts, a change to the precinct map is being proposed, which shifts 1,139 registered voters from Stryker to Matoaka for a better balance of 5,382 registered voters assigned to the Stryker precinct versus 5,086 registered voters assigned to Matoaka. The registered voters affected by the change are in the area south of Francis Street and east of South Boundary Street. Maps of the proposed change can be found at williamsburgva.gov/precincts.The change does not affect voters’ assigned state or congressional districts.Voters in the Stryker precinct vote at the Community Building, 401 N. Boundary St.; voters in the Matoaka precinct vote at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road.Virginia state law requires localities to revise precinct boundaries whenever the number of voters who voted in a precinct in an election for President of the United States exceeds 4,000. The Stryker precinct is nearing that threshold, and this proposed change lowers the potential for Stryker to exceed it in the near future.City Council will host a public hearing on the proposed map at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2023, in the City Council Chambers of Stryker Center, 412 N.
