Lifeguards Wanted

10

James City County issued the following announcement on Aug. 25

Parks & Recreation is hiring lifeguards to staff the James City County Recreation Center indoor pool. Benefits include competitive pay of $13.86/hour, up to a 28-hour work week, flexible work schedules, paid trainings and free Recreation Center membership. Open interviews are being held monthly through December.

Potential candidates can stop by the Recreation Center during the designated times listed below for an interview and swim test (if not already certified). Swim tests for American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding are conducted as part of the interview process. Successfully completing the swim test does not guarantee employment; employment is determined by successfully completing the entire lifeguarding course and passing post-hiring practices conducted through the James City County Human Resources Department.

Appointments are not needed; drop-in on any of the following days, 5-7 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Road:

Wednesday, Sept. 15

Wednesday, Oct. 20

Wednesday, Nov. 10

Wednesday, Dec. 22

Applicants must be at least 16 years or older, have a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification with First Aid, CRP and AED training and complete a swim test.

The prerequisite test consists of:

•Swim 100 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both; however, swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.

•Tread water for two minutes using only legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

•Complete a timed event within 50 seconds:

-Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.

-Submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.

-Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water.

-Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
