Women's Soccer Rolls to 4-0 Win over Hampton, Clinches CAA Tournament Berth

William & Mary women's soccer scored a season-high four goals, including three in the second half, to top in-state foe Hampton, 4-0, at Wanner Stadium on Sunday. Thanks to the win, the Tribe secured a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship for the first time since 2017.

 

W&M (7-7-4, 3-3-3 CAA) took the lead in the first half on sophomore Gabriella Kurtas's first career goal. Freshman Nora Green-Orset played a through ball down the left side and Kurtas scored with a low shot to the far post in the 36th minute.

 

Leading 1-0 at the break, a pair of Tribe freshmen scored just 22 seconds apart in the 66th minute to extend the lead to 3-0. Off a corner kick, senior Kayleigh Shackford and junior Kenna Zier combined before a cross found the head of Madison Moon who scored over the top of the Hampton goalkeeper. It was Shackford's team-leading seventh assist and Moon's third goal of the year.

 

Freshman Ivey Crain scored for the ninth time this season less than 30 ticks later. A Jillian O'Toole pass over the top of the Pirates' (2-14-1, 0-9 CAA) defense found Crain and she chipped the Hampton goalkeeper to push the advantage to three goals.

 

Shackford scored her first goal of the season to cap the scoring in the 76th minute. Green-Orset picked up her second assist of the contest, finding the senior midfielder. Shackford chipped the HU goalkeeper from the left side of the area.

 

With the victory, W&M finished seventh in the CAA standing to earn a spot in the CAA Championship. It marked the first meeting between the Tribe and the Pirates since HU started women's soccer in 2015.
