City of Williamsburg issued the following announcement on Jun. 8.
The City of Williamsburg won a top information technology award for its use of geospatial information systems (GIS) on its COVID-19 dashboard.
The Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), the leading trade association for the global information technology industry, and the Public Technology Institute (PTI) announced the winners of the 2021 PTI Solutions Awards last week. The City of Williamsburg won in the category of Geospatial Information Systems for localities with a population under 50,000.
The City’s COVID-19 dashboard serves as a hub of information regarding COVID-19 case counts and the vaccine distribution effort, streaming data from various resources, including the Virginia Department of Health.
“The City’s COVID-19 dashboard was designed to be a one-stop shop for COVID-related information throughout the Greater Williamsburg area,” said Mark Barham, the City’s director of Information Technology. “We are thrilled to have this work recognized by the Public Technology Institute and appreciate all of the hard work Sela Gordon, the City’s GIS Analyst, put into this important project.”
The annual PTI Solutions Awards program recognizes CompTIA member cities and counties that have developed or deployed innovative technology solutions within the past 15 months that positively affected local government performance and service to the communities.
Most nominated projects focused on challenges associated with the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of all sizes.
Categories included: Information Technology, Customer Service, Geospatial Information Systems; Public Safety, Emergency Management and Community Resiliency, Web Services, E-Government, and Mobile Apps; and Sustainability.
“These awards honor the dedicated and vital work of public sector technology leaders and their teams,” said Dr. Alan Shark, executive director of the Public Technology Institute. “The last year has been one for the history books and local governments faced a barrage of challenges to keep their operations up and running and to serve their communities during these unprecedented times. Our winners this year show us all how resilient and innovative local governments can be when we need them most.”
