Williamsburg–James City County Public Schools (WJCC) has announced its Winter Weather Plan, detailing procedures for potential schedule changes or school closures due to adverse weather conditions.

According to a news release by WJCC Schools, the district will inform families of any unplanned schedule changes or closures through various communication channels. These include phone calls, text messages, emails, the WJCC Schools website, social media accounts, and local media outlets. Families are advised to keep their contact information current in ParentVUE or through their school’s main office to receive timely alerts.

The division covers 143 square miles, meaning different areas may experience varying weather conditions during the same event. The safety of students and staff is prioritized when making decisions about schedule adjustments. This includes considering current and forecasted conditions as well as roadway and building readiness. Notifications of closures are typically issued by 5:30 a.m. or by 9:30 p.m. the night before if conditions clearly warrant closure; otherwise, schools follow a normal schedule.

For extended closures caused by severe weather or emergencies, WJCC Schools has a Closure Contingency Plan that may temporarily shift learning to remote virtual formats. This plan ensures students remain engaged and continue their education until in-person instruction can safely resume.

WJCC serves 11,379 K–12 students across 16 schools. The district includes a diverse student body with economically disadvantaged students, English learners, special education participants, and those in gifted programs. The district employs nearly 2,000 staff members, including over 1,000 teachers—63% of whom hold master’s degrees—and 50 nationally board-certified educators. Superintendent Daniel Keever leads the district under the governance of a school board that meets monthly for work sessions and regular meetings.
