William & Mary ranked eighth in average coaching salary among Virginia’s post-secondary institutions in 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The data indicates that William & Mary coaches earned an average salary of $171,885, with the top salary reaching $220,370.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University led the state with the highest average coaching salary in 2024, paying $679,407.

Coaches at Virginia post-secondary schools earned an average salary of $116,824 in 2024, marking a 7% increase from $109,197 the previous year.

A Knight Commission report projects that within a decade, some Power 5 football coaches will earn more than their schools spend on scholarships and medical care for all athletes. The study estimates more than $1 billion in new annual revenue from the expanded College Football Playoff and media rights deals. By 2032, nearly half of public Power 5 schools could reach this ‘crossover point.’
