William & Mary baseball falls to George Mason in high-scoring game

William & Mary lost a close game against George Mason on May 5 at Plumeri Park, with the final score 15-14.

The matchup saw William & Mary come back from an early six-run deficit by scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Matthew Kosuda and Chase Ecker each had RBI singles before Kevin Francella tied the game with a two-run double. Witt Scafidi later hit a two-run single, giving William & Mary a three-run lead. Kosuda added another RBI single, and Charlie Iriotakis closed out the big inning with a run-scoring double.

George Mason responded by scoring three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to take a one-run lead. In the fifth, Scafidi doubled to allow Jamie Laskofski to score and tie the game at 13-13. However, George Mason scored twice in the sixth inning to go ahead again.

Scafidi continued his strong performance with another double in the seventh, bringing Sam Kaczmarek home for William & Mary’s final run of the night. In their last chance during the ninth inning, Laskofski walked but was left on base as George Mason secured their win.

Noah Hertzler pitched nearly three innings without allowing any runs for William & Mary, while Hank Lippman threw a scoreless ninth. Carter Kelsey earned the win for George Mason and Diego Cardenas recorded a save; Jack Weight took the loss for William & Mary.

The team collected 13 hits overall. Scafidi finished with three hits and four runs batted in; Kosuda, Ecker, and Anthony Greco each had multiple hits as well. Laskofski stole two bases and scored twice while William & Mary turned three double plays during the contest.

Looking ahead, William & Mary will begin its home Colonial Athletic Association series against Towson on Friday at 6 p.m.
