Tribe Falls In Extras Despite Comeback

31

College of William and Mary Athletics issued the following announcement on March 8

Despite a furious late inning comeback, William & Mary fell in extra innings 5-4 to Georgetown Tuesday night in Williamsburg. Trailing 4-1 going into the seventh, the Tribe scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to tie the game 4-4, but it was not enough as the team fell to 5-4 on the year.

Matt Thomas had a pair of hits and scored two runs, including the tying run in the eighth. Zach Tsakounis started for the Tribe and gave up just one run on three hits with three punch-outs over three innings. Adam Fischer was dominant with four strikeouts and zero earned runs over 2.1 innings, and Matt Howat delivered a superb effort in a tough-luck loss tossing 3.1 innings giving up just one run in the 10th.

A leadoff double would lead to a run as Georgetown jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After a pair of scoreless frames, Delossantos extended his hitting streak with a single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a balk. However the threat would be neutralized as Delossantos was cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Luca Danos.

In the fourth, leadoff man Ethan Stern would take a 2-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left field to extend the Hoyas's lead to 2-0. After a pair of strikeouts, Georgetown would draw a walk and Owen Carapellotti hit a two-run shot to make it 4-0 for the visitors. The Tribe would plate the home team's first runner in the bottom half as Thomas would single and move to second on a hit from Trotta. Thomas would later come home on an RBI single from Jack Cone.

The Tribe struck twice in the seventh as Cole Ragone delivered a two-out double to straight away center and was followed by a Delossantos walk. Tyler Solomon would pinch hit and plate both runners with a single to make it a one-run game. In the eighth, Thomas led off with a double to right center and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Tribe, Jake Hyde would lead-off the 10th with a single and score on a close play at the plate to give the Hoyas the lead, and eventually the win.

UP NEXT: William & Mary will begin a five-game road trip Friday with a weekend series at Georgia Southern before facing Davidson next week in a Tuesday doubleheader.
