The James City County Recreation Center will be closed for annual maintenance from November 17 to 23. During this period, members can use their passes at the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center during regular hours. Additionally, the center’s pool remains closed for renovations and is expected to reopen on November 24.
In observance of Thanksgiving, both the James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center will be closed on November 27. All county parks will remain open, but offices and stores at several locations, including Chickahominy Riverfront Park and Freedom Park, will be closed on November 27 and 28.
A variety of programs are scheduled throughout November at the recreation center and other local venues. These include arts workshops such as clay turkey making for young children on November 20, a gingerbread house workshop for ages six to twelve on November 14, and pottery sessions for adults later in the month.
STEM-focused activities are also planned. A hands-on workshop called “4-H STEMQuest” will take place on November 8 for youth aged nine to thirteen in partnership with VCE- James City County 4-H.
Health and wellness offerings include fitness classes like Bounce Fitness: Gratitude GLOW on November 28, an introductory indoor cycling class on November 8, tai chi sessions aimed at arthritis management and fall prevention on November 13, as well as meditation workshops throughout the month.
Programs supporting inclusion and therapeutic recreation are available as well. Activities such as Exceptional Expeditions offer trips for adults with disabilities; Teensational Socials provide social opportunities for teens with disabilities; yoga classes are held in partnership with The Arc of Greater Williamsburg.
Outdoor events feature guided hikes during the full moon at Freedom Park (November 5), a Veterans Bark and Play event (November 1), fishing instruction at Chickahominy Riverfront Park (November 8), park tours highlighting county green spaces (November 14), and educational tours about riparian buffer gardens at Brickyard Landing by appointment.
Special events this month include a Legacy Hall Showcase in New Town on November 2 for those interested in renting event space or meeting vendors, as well as a Live Well Expo focused on senior services scheduled for November 6 at the recreation center.
Sports programming features introductory pickleball courses beginning early in the month. Teen-focused field trips such as farm visits or cornhole competitions are also offered under “Teens on Target.”
Before-and-after school care programs continue to operate but currently have waitlists due to high demand across all sites except James River Elementary School.
