James City County Police Department has announced plans to conduct a DUI checkpoint starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and continuing until 2 a.m. on Friday, July 4. The checkpoint will be set up in an area within James City County that has previously experienced incidents of impaired driving.

The locations for these checkpoints are chosen based on traffic data analysis, crash patterns, and past enforcement related to DUIs. The primary goal is not to make arrests but to enhance public safety by discouraging impaired driving through visible enforcement and engagement.

During the operation, officers will briefly interact with drivers to check for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and verify driver’s licenses as required. The checkpoint will be clearly marked with law enforcement vehicles, traffic cones, and warning signs to ensure motorist safety and compliance with state law.

The department reminds drivers that impairment can result from alcohol as well as marijuana, certain prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead by using a designated driver or rideshare service if they intend to consume substances that could impair their ability to drive.

DUI-related offenses carry serious consequences including fines, court costs, license suspension, and the potential for serious injury or loss of life. James City County Police emphasize their commitment to protecting the public through education, high-visibility enforcement, and strategic prevention initiatives.
