James City County Police have announced plans to conduct a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) checkpoint starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, November 21, and continuing until 2 a.m. on Saturday, November 22. The checkpoint will take place at a location in James City County identified for previous incidents involving impaired driving.
According to the department, locations for these checkpoints are chosen based on an analysis of traffic data, crash patterns, and past DUI-related enforcement activity. The main goal is to increase public safety by discouraging impaired driving through visible police presence and engagement rather than focusing solely on making arrests.
During the checkpoint operation, officers will briefly stop drivers to check for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and confirm that drivers’ licenses are valid as required by law. The area will be clearly marked with police vehicles, cones, and warning signs to help ensure the safety of motorists and compliance with state regulations.
The department also reminds the public that impairment can result from not only alcohol but also marijuana, certain prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs. They advise anyone planning to use substances that could affect their ability to drive to arrange for a designated driver or use rideshare services.
“DUI-related offenses can result in fines, court costs, license suspension, and the potential for serious injury or loss of life. James City County Police are committed to protecting the public through education, high-visibility enforcement, and strategic prevention initiatives,” said the department.
