An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the area, effective from 10 a.m. on June 23 until 8 p.m. on June 25. In response, James City County Recreation Center and Williamsburg Regional Library are available as cooling centers during their open hours to help residents and visitors cope with the heat. Pets, except for service animals, are not permitted in these facilities.
The Virginia Department of Health offers several recommendations to prevent heat-related illnesses during this period. They advise staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water while avoiding beverages with caffeine, high sugar content, or alcohol as they can lead to dehydration.
Staying indoors in air-conditioned environments is recommended to avoid heat-related illnesses. If air conditioning is unavailable at home, spending time in public places like libraries or stores can help. Wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing is advised to reflect sunlight, along with using hats or umbrellas and applying sunscreen.
Physical activity should be limited during peak heat hours, especially outdoors. If outdoor work is necessary, frequent breaks in cool areas and regular hydration are essential.
It is crucial not to leave children or pets inside vehicles as temperatures can rapidly rise above 150 degrees Fahrenheit, posing severe risks of heat stroke or death. Checking on neighbors is also encouraged since older adults are particularly vulnerable to heat-related complications.
