Louie Bartletti hit a home run in the sixth inning, but William & Mary lost to Elon 7-5 on May 3 at Plumeri Park.
The game saw William & Mary take an early lead, but Elon rallied late to secure the win. This result impacts both teams’ records as they approach the end of their seasons.
Owen Pierce started for the Tribe and pitched two scoreless innings, leaving three runners stranded and striking out two. In the second inning, Kevin Francella drove in Bartletti with a single, and Witt Scafidi scored on a throwing error, giving William & Mary a 2-0 advantage. Zach Boyd relieved Pierce and kept Elon off the scoreboard until the fifth inning when Jared Hall’s two-run homer put Elon ahead.
William & Mary responded with an RBI groundout from Jamie Laskofski in the fifth to tie it at three. Bartletti’s solo home run in the sixth gave his team another brief lead. However, Elon’s four-run seventh inning proved decisive. Laskofski added a sacrifice fly in response, but Elon’s Michael Staiano finished out the game with over two shutout innings for the save.
Cole Hansen earned the win for Elon while Tom Bourque took the loss for William & Mary. Charlie Seneker pitched three relief innings for William & Mary, allowing three hits and striking out two batters. Francella went three-for-four with two runs scored and one RBI; Bartletti and Scafidi each had two hits in four at-bats.
William & Mary’s next game is scheduled against George Mason on Tuesday evening at Plumeri Park.
